In 2012 cherish and gina crossed paths in Ann Arbor where they studied together under Cookie Gomez to hone their curly hair skills. As a team they worked together in two top curly salons, they then decided to branch off on their own to form Crystal Skull Studio in 2016. With 13 years of hair experience each, they had a stronger desire for community and creativity. By networking with other artists and local small businesses they created an environment that is integrative and unbiased. As of April 2018 Gina has continued on their journey in Austin, tx, and has since opened Symbolica Salon. Gina returns to Crystal Skull every 6-8 weeks to see clients, while Cherish continues to work independently; challenging her creative skills, and expanding on the ideas of community and connectivity.
currently the salon is a fun and judgement free atmosphere that specializes in curly and natural texture, as well as creative cuts and color. It is important that you leave with a positive attitude and a radical hairstyle! We are networking with local artists and small businesses to provide a unique experience for our guests. Thirsty? We're serving locally brewed coffee, tea, and beer. Rotating local artwork reinvents the atmosphere bi-monthly, so if you're interested in getting involved, fill out an application form! With an eclectic passion for music, we set the vibe with a variety of tunes at all times. Crystal skull studio would like to establish an environment that offers more than just great hair!
Cherish Baser started her journey as a creative cut and color specialist at the age of fifteen. Her career path as a stylist stemmed from growing up in a salon with a beautician mother who served as her mentor and inspiration. She started her professional education with Douglas J. Aveda Institute of East Lansing in 2004, and continued crafting her creative and technical skills in Las Vegas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit and elsewhere. Her nationwide travels within the industry have led to learning under the umbrellas of multiple product lines such as Pravana, Matrix, Redken,
American Crew and many others. Her latest education experience was training under highly educated curly hair specialists while simultaneously training in Ouidad cutting techniques. Cherish has dedicated herself to an 80% curly hair clientele for the last four years, obtaining an expertise in curly hair that ranges from kinky to wavy hair, and everything across the curly hair spectrum.
For the last five years Cherish has been an active member of the Ann Arbor community. She is a strong presence in the local art, music, and LGBT communities giving a helping hand in organizing local events as a member of the Far House Collective, and the City Beautification Bureau. These organizations have given local and touring artists a space to showcase their art, and raise money for local charities. Cherish is looking forward to collaborating with small local businesses, as well as local artists to help maintain a vibrant ecosystem within our community.
Cherish is inspired by her guest's personal style. Whether sculpting curls, creative coloring, or high fashion cutting, her goal is to meet the need of every person that sits in her chair. Driven by creative arts and education, she would like to offer more than a service. She would like to offer culture and experience in addition to adding her unique touch to the clients of Crystal Skull Studio.
gina is non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them
Gina has always been interested in creative expression and regularly changes up their own image to reflect how they feel, which they find very important when working with their guests. The two driving factors for choosing their career path were showcasing their creativity while positively impacting the lives of others. Gina specializes in working with curly and natural textures, or anyone who wants to spend minimal time on their daily hair routine. They understand and promote the importance of a hairstyle that suits each clients face and body, while also reflecting their personality and lifestyle.
Gina started doing hair in 2006, before moving to Ann Arbor, MI in 2013 where they did a 6 month apprenticeship learning specific techniques for textures ranging from curly and coily, to very straight hair. Graduate of the Multimedia Makeup Academy, Gina continues to develop and hone their professional makeup skills. Working with a variety of talented photographers, stylists, and designers in Detroit has further ignited their passion for the beauty and fashion industry.
Currently Gina lives in Austin, TX where they work at Symbolica Salon, and travels to Michigan every 6-8 weeks to work here at Crystal Skull Studio.
